Rockbridge Old Time Music & Dance Festival
" ...not your
usual festival. There's no contest and no fancy line-up of big-name acts. No
crowds. But if you love dancing
and old-time music in a mellow setting, it's the one for you..."

Despite
hurricane warnings Jill, Peter and Leslie, drawn by reports of possible
trebuchet demonstrations and the Green Grass Cloggers reunion, loaded up the
new Vanjo and headed down Rt. I-81 to meet up with Kevin and Jan, Paul and
Virginia, Keith S. and Bill L. for a weekend of old time jamming at
Glen Maury Park
in Buena Vista,
Virginia. We set up our best Rockbridge FOB Hamlet ever with
three 10 by 10s and Bill's and Keith's canopied vans. After hamlet
building, we enjoyed a tasty traditional hotdog-boil ~ both beef and veggie
~ complete with potluck goodies from everyone's kitchens and gardens. The
predicted heavy rain and wind finally arrived Friday night and at one point
it almost, but not quite, drowned the whole jam for the night.
But, the month before, we had survived the great rains of Clifftop
2008 so we were prepared with our EZ-Up umbrella-bailout devices, raincoats
and boots and prevailed a while longer before climbing into our various
tents. Saturday morning dawned wet and grey but, ever-hopeful,
most of us stayed on and by early afternoon the clouds passed, the sun came
out and it was as pretty as it can be in that little valley.
Other FOBers joining us for jamming and feasting included JC and Pat, Trent,
Katy and Rich, Bill B., Howard and Jim, Ulrike and William, Andrea, Joe L,
Frank. I'm probably forgetting some folks and I apologize.
Another highlight was a small road trip for Virginia, where she found horses
as well as treasures for the dog-sitter. I think Jill purchased
Bill's mandolin?? JC and Trent led us in the infamous, fiddle/banjo
cross-G jam late Saturday night and Katy and Rich finished off our great
time on Sunday morning by hosting a (hopefully annual?) burrito brunch in
the pavilion at the end of the park. Sunday afternoon we headed
back home as another festival season drew to a close.
