In 2004,
the FOB site was launched with a mission to serve as inspiration to
beginning players who were feeling that they would never progress, never
know anyone to talk to about their old time music obsession, never feel
brave enough to play in front of people, etc., etc.. We were
eager to share what we had learned ~ that forming an old time practice group
was just the thing to help us take the leap and begin to progress as
players.
In 2007, thanks to the enthusiasm of some of our newer players, the
Beginner's Old Time Practice/Jam lives on. If you are
in the DC Metropolitan area and are interested in learning to play old time
music, we welcome you to this practice group, where players take turns
hosting the monthly session. If you do not live locally we encourage
you to start your own group and we hope that some of the resources on
our site will help you get started.
You will find that through a
practice group you will gain the benefits of the community that develops
naturally when you meet regularly to play music. Your playing will
improve and it is just plain good fun to play and swap tunes, to delve into
the music’s history, to go to concerts and festivals, and to talk endlessly
about old time music with folks who share your passion for it.
