Summer
- Fall 2005
The Park credited FOB with 40 hours of volunteer time for playing on the
canal. The credit goes to Barbara & Ruth. They loved canal life so
much when we played there in June, that they signed up to spend
weekends driving mules and playing banjo.

Those lazy, barefoot days of summer found us playing on the C&O Canal.
FOB’s own Pat, mule-driver extraordinaire, arranged for us to set up camp
along the canal in Georgetown and we played banjos for hours! Pat’s
looking for volunteers to play on the barge trips at 4:30 p.m. in July.
Please contact Pat if you’re interested.

Back to Massey for our final workshop until fall, as Diane takes off
for a summer of festivals and gigs. Surprisingly there was no bridge
traffic despite an absolutely flawless day. We learned Three
Forks of Sandy, Waynesboro, Red Rocking Chair and Falls of
Richmond. We hung out a little after the workshop and played
Bill's fretless banjos. Jill and Mike played a duet or was it half a
duet? |
 | April 16 Our April
trip to Massey. We met some of
Diane's other students, Mike from NY, Bill from PA and Steve from NJ.
Diane had to take the swatter to some of us who had "anchor" problems.
Good food again. We learned some awesome tunes -- Ship in the
Clouds, Little Rose, John Henry and Same Old Man.

Brooke Parkhurst, banjo teacher to many of us as well as FOB
inspiration, gave Barbara, Ruth, Phil, Leslie and Michael a brilliant
all-day workshop. Although the day began with the Royal Wedding Hat
Critique, we later cracked down and learned Big Scioty, Lee
Hammond's Callaway (that was a challenge!) and a
singing tune - Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss.
We were also treated to Brooke's lovely, Wammie award-winning voice
when she demoed Fly Around... Potluck lunch was
delicious as usual. And speaking of awards, Barbara's dog, Lydia,
won the prize as Best Behaved Banjo Dog (sorry Tru, you weren't
even close). We also awarded Ruth's cat Best Tight Fit in a Banjo
Case and both Lydia and Joe ( Phil's dog) received honorable mentions
for Largest Hurdle in Purchasing New Banjo Because of Most Expensive
Vet Bill Within A One Week Period. |

March Monthly Massey Pilgrimage for a another old time banjo workshop.
Diane's beautiful Labrador Retriever, Amy, had some new puppies! We
learned some good tunes, Melvin Wine's Ladies Waist Ribbon,
Hobart Smith's Last Chance, Wilson Douglas's Brushy
Run and a singing tune Pig in a Pen. We got
homework! Next month, we have to come back with 6 verses each to
sing along toPig in the Pen. I wish Diane could witness
the excitement we share in the car each time we leave her house. She
is an awesome teacher. |

Our first anniversary! We welcomed some wonderful new folks --
Howard, Pat, Jim and Jane. Most of the rest of the gang were there
but Rosemarie and Ruth had to sit this one out so we're going to celebrate
next month, too. We played tunes and ooed and awed over Phil's
gorgeous new (old) banjo. Donna made a lemon meringue pie from
scratch that was like eating lemon clouds. This sure is fun!

Howard Jones put together a fabulous 2-day workshop featuring
Dave Bing from West Virginia. Hubie King and his wife, Chris,
generously hosted us in their music room. Fiddle students came for
class on Saturday, banjo students, fiddle students and other players came
Saturday night for an old time jam and banjo students got their all-day
lesson on Sunday. Jill, Rosemarie and Leslie were lucky to be able
to attend (including a banjo slumber party at Rosemarie's on Saturday
night after the jam) . We met lots of new banjo friends and Dave was
an excellent (and fun) teacher. We learned Pretty Little
Widow, Santa Anna's Retreat (ouch!), Aunt Jenny's Sugarhill
and a G version of Cumberland Gap. Click here to see
more of
the Dave Bing workshop pictures. |

We're thinking we're about the luckiest banjoing and fiddling people in
the world, today, because old time fiddler
Alan Jabbour
came to play with us! We're all pretty sure there isn't a nicer
person than Alan. We know for sure that he is a wonderful fiddler
and warm, supportive mentor. We also got to celebrate Rosemarie's
50th birthday and, to top the day off, our very own Brooke came to share
in the good times (and make us sound good!) Click here to see more of
FOB meets Alan Jabbour. Click here to see how to order

OK, Imagine this. Pumpkins, Puppies, Potluck and Banjos. How
good can one day get?! Phil, Jill, Ruth, Donna, Paul, Leslie and
Barbara made our way across the Bay Bridge to Massey, for another amazing
workshop with Diane Jones. We learned Little Sadie,
Horny-O and Boatin' up the Sandy in Diane's
beautiful, atrium-like sitting room. Honestly, can life get any
better than this?

Jill's New Year's resolution is to play often at the open mic at the New
Deal Cafe. This was her first 2005 performance so Barbara and Leslie
joined Peter to cheer her on. Of course, our Jill was
wonderful and the food was fine. A good evening. |
